Mikuls, Bearer of Gifts; A Christmas Eve story for the family
The Good Master, first published in 1935 and still in print today, is set in Hungary before the First World War. The story is of [Kate Seredy], a spoiled city girl from Budapest who comes to live with her Uncle Sndor on his ranch. Through adventures with her cousin Jancsi, Kate learns to appreciate the country life and traditions. This excerpt tells of Kate and Jancsi's meeting with Hungary's beloved [Mikuls]. Mikuls looked at Kate intently, but he did not say anything. He climbed in next to Father, and Jancsi started the horses. Jancsi was more puzzled than ever. His father was talking to the mysterious Mikuls as if he were talking to a regular everyday man. Kate wiggled on the seat -- she kept turning around trying to see the face of Mikuls. But it was very dark. Besides, if she stretched her neck too far out of her sheepskin, the wind stuck a very unpleasant icy finger down her back. Mikuls didn't say a word. He brought a small package from the sleigh. There were two pairs of warm mittens in the package, two big picture books, two boxes of candy, and, best of all, two beautiful riding whips. He handed them to Jancsi. Jancsi looked at them longingly for a second. He looked at Kate. But he shook his head. He remembered the two boys in this last house. Their father was the poorest man in the village. Then he smiled at Mikuls. \"These are beautiful gifts, but these are very poor children. Thank you for letting us leave them here.\"

MARY MONTGOMERY, REBEL
IF MORE stories for growing girls presented the Civil War from either side in a way as reasonable as this one does, it would be the better for us. Mary Montgomery, fourteen when it opens, is still on their Georgia plantation with her mother and...
